History
For centuries, the Spiš region of present-day Slovakia was one of the most advanced in Central Europe economically, socially and in culture. Today it is famous for its historical monuments, unspoiled wilderness and the tradition of fruit-growing and distilleries.
Spirits began to be produced in Spiš back in the 12th century and they still enjoy a wonderful reputation now, especially in the city of Stará Ľubovňa. In 1343, King Louis I the Hungary elevated Lubló Castle’s town into a royal city, granting it many privileges. Among them was the right to make wine, brew beer and distill spirits. Ever since, pálenka, the Slavic word for distilled brandies, has been an integral part of Spiš.
